Grand Valley State scored the first seven points of the game and led throughout in a 57-38 non-conference victory over Lewis Saturday night.
Grand Valley State, ranked 18th in NCAA Division II, improved to 7-2, while Lewis slipped to 5-4 with its third consecutive loss.
The Flyers overcame their slow start and cut the Grand Valley State lead to 11-8 with 14:05 left in the first half. But the Lakers built a 21-8 cushion by scoring the next 10 points and maintained a double-digit advantage the rest of the way, including a 27-13 halftime margin.
Grand Valley State kept Lewis at bay in the second half by shooting 69 percent from the floor, including a 4-of-5 effort from 3-point range.
Brandon Dagans tallied team highs of 13 points and three assists for the Flyers. Stephan Bolt and Brandon Alexander tied for team rebounding honors with four apiece.
Grand Valley State's Kyle Carhart scored 14 points off the bench to lead all players. Jason Jamerson was 3-of-6 from 3-point distance and registered 13 points, and Dan Redder scored 12. Jamerson and Mike Hall grabbed a game-high seven rebounds apiece.
Lewis returns to action Tuesday night by challenging Illinois State in Normal. Game time is 7 p.m.
