The Indianapolis Greyhounds missed two free throws and two 3-pointers in the final 20 seconds of regulation, allowing the Lewis Flyers to escape with a 59-56 win, in a Great Lakes Valley Conference contest Thursday evening at Nicoson Hall.
The Flyers improved to 17-7 (13-3 GLVC) and won their third straight game, while the Greyhounds fell to 10-14 (5-11 GLVC).
Shante Glenn led the Flyers with 13 points and was joined in double figures by Mary Moskal and Darcee Schmidt, who each tallied 11. Moskal led the Flyers with nine rebounds and eight assists. Erin Cox added a season-best six points in 10 minutes of play off the bench.
Down by three with 18 seconds to play, the Greyhounds had a final chance to tie, but they missed two attempts from 3-point range before the clock ran out.
The game was tied 53-53 with 5:14 to play in regulation before a Glenn layup, a Schmidt steal and a Moskal jumper on consecutive plays put the Flyers up by four points with 3:27 left.
Alli Opfer brought the Greyhounds back to within one point when she hit 3-of-3 free throws with 1:07 left. The Greyhounds had a chance to take the lead thanks to another Lewis foul, but Isabell Rhenwrick missed both of her free throws.
Schmidt grabbed the rebound on the second Rhenwrick miss and the Flyers called timeout. After the timeout, the Flyers got the ball to Moskal, who was immediately fouled. Moskal connected on both free throws to put Lewis up by three, setting up the Greyhounds' final rush.
Falling behind 4-0 in the early going, the Flyers rallied to take the lead at 7-6 and managed to increase it to as many as 11, their biggest of the night, before settling for a nine-point halftime advantage.
The Greyhounds chipped away at the Lewis lead all second half, finally tying the game at the 5:14 mark to set up the frantic finish.
Amanda Norris led the Greyhounds with game highs of 18 points and 11 rebounds and was the only Indianapolis player in double figures. Rhenwrick and Opfer each had nine points.
The Flyers shot 39 percent from the field, including 10-of-24 from 3-point range. They hit 7-of-8 free throws and collected 35 rebounds. Indianapolis shot 33 percent and went 14-of-19 from the foul line. The Greyhounds brought down 38 rebounds.
The Flyers play again on Saturday at Saint Joseph's at 1 pm.
