After averaging an uncharacteristic 8.5 points per game over the last four games, junior Darcee Schmidt dropped a Flyers' season high of 27 points to lead Lewis to an 89-69 rout of Saint Joseph's College, Saturday afternoon in a Great Lakes Valley Conference clash at the Richard F. Scharf Alumni Fieldhouse.
The Flyers won their fourth straight game and improved to 18-7 (14-3 GLVC), while Saint Joseph's fell to 13-12 (6-11 GLVC) for the season. Lewis' 20-point margin of victory was its biggest since an 86-62 decision over Wisconsin-Parkside on Jan. 14, and its 89 points were the most since a 95-point outing against Ferris State on Dec. 21.
Schmidt, who shot 11-of-18 from the field, matched her career high in points and collected a season-best 10 rebounds to record her first double-double of the year. Two other Flyers reach double digits in points, as junior Mary Moskal tallied 18 with seven rebounds and senior Shante Glenn totaled 13 with three boards and four assists.
Junior Erin Cox set a season high in points for the second straight game by going 4-of-4 from the field for eight points.
The game was tied 17-17 with 7:52 to play in the first half before the Flyers outscored the Pumas 20-10 the rest of the period to take a 10-point lead into intermission.
Two Moskal free throws in the first minute of the second half put the Flyers up by 12, and the Pumas never recovered. Lewis maintained a least a two-touchdown cushion the rest of the game, leading by as many as 23, before closing out the lopsided win.
Michelle Boya led Saint Joseph's with 16 points and was one of four Pumas to reach double digits in points. Allison Hughes (14), Rachel Theodore (12) and Patience Meyer (10) joined Boya in double figures.
The Flyers shot an impressive 56 percent from the field and went 10-of-18 from the free-throw line, while the Pumas hit 41 percent from the floor and made 17-of-24 from the line. Lewis controlled the boards 42-28.
The Flyers wrap-up regular-season play with their final two home games of the year when they host Bellarmine on Thursday at 5:30 pm and first-place Northern Kentucky on Saturday at 1 pm.
