Despite 19 points from Kelly Dianis, the No. 5 Drury Lady Panthers downed the Lewis Flyers 90-71, in Great Lakes Valley Conference action Saturday afternoon at Weiser Gym.
The Flyers, who lost for only the second time in their last 11 games, dropped to 14-7 (10-3 GLVC), while Drury improved to 20-1 (13-0 GLVC) for the season.
Dianis, who led the team in scoring, shot 7-of-14 from the field, 3-of-7 from 3-point range and 2-of-3 from the foul line. Mary Moskal tallied 15 points and was the only other Flyer in double figures. Lauren Martens added a season-high eight points in 21 minutes of action off the bench.
The Flyers missed their first eight shots and turned the ball over seven times by the 13:02 mark of the first half, allowing Drury to open a 17-0 lead. Lewis battled back with an 11-2 run of its own over the next two minutes, cutting the lead to eight points.
The game stayed close over the next several minutes, and the Flyers came within six points near the end of the half, but could not come any closer than that.
Turnovers plagued the Flyers in the opening minutes of the second half, and Drury took advantage with a 19-4 run to open a 25-point cushion and put the game out of reach for the Flyers.
Allison Regier led the Lady Panthers with 20 points, and Amanda Newton posted a double-double of 13 points and 13 rebounds. Amy Belew was the third Lady Panther to reach double figures with 10 points.
The Flyers shot 42 percent from the floor, went 14-of-22 from the foul line and brought down 37 rebounds. Drury hit 49 percent of its shots, made 15-of-19 from the line and grabbed 40 boards.
The Flyers play next at Wisconsin-Parkside on Tuesday at 5:30 pm.
