Lancers rally past Flyers

RIVERSIDE, Calif. - Despite a match-high 16 kills from Drew Pickering, the Flyers (5-11) fell to NAIA No. 2 California Baptist 3-0 (30-32, 25-30, 26-30), Friday night at Van Dyne Gym.

Pickering also had five digs, matching Mykolai Zerebeckyj and Nick Perakes for the team lead. David Kelnhofer totaled seven kills and assisted on three blocks while Billy Sahagian had five kills, hitting .333 for the match.

California Baptist had to come from behind in each game to earn the sweep.

The Flyers appeared to be in the driver's seat in the first game after a kill by Drew Pickering gave them a 29-28 advantage, but the Lancers fired right back. A block by Urs Gunthor and Dan Buehring capped the win.

A kill by Seidu Ajanako gave the Lancers the lead for good at 15-14 in the second game, and Ajanako added another to give California Baptist its biggest lead of the game, at 26-20.

The Flyers were up 11-7 in the final game before Corey Spence notched a kill to kick off an 11-5 Lancer run. California Baptist led by 25-20 after Dan Buehring ripped a service ace, and the team held on for the win.

Romain Vetter led the Lancers with 10 kills and assisted on two blocks. Sun Yukai and Seidu Ajanako each tallied nine kills.

The Flyers return to action on March 15 with a match at Carthage at 7:30 pm.
