Game 2 Box Score

ST. LOUIS - Lewis pitchers Courtney Lyons and Lisa Gartland combined to allow just three hits and no runs in a 6-0 and 8-0 (six innings) doubleheader sweep of Missouri-St. Louis, Sunday afternoon in Great Lakes Valley Conference action.

The Flyers improved to 14-2 (4-0 GLVC), winners of five straight games.

Lyons (5-1), who pitched the first game, allowed two hits and set a Flyers' season high with nine strikeouts.

Gartland (3-0), who went the distance in the second contest, gave up a hit to the first batter of the game and then was perfect the rest of the way. She struck out three and has yet to allow an earned run this season.

Shannon Roney, Mallory Paine and Kristy Vanek provided the bulk of the run production in both games. Roney went 3-for-5 with five RBIs, Paine was 4-for-7 with two RBIs and Vanek had a 3-for-5 day with two RBIs.

Robin Martz went 3-for-6 with three runs and two stolen bases, and Amy Yusko, who now has an eight-game hit streak, was 2-for-4 with three runs and an RBI.

Kelly Dianis had a pinch-hit in her first action of the season. Michelle Yudys went 1-for-2 with two runs in a couple of pinch-hitting spots, and Gartland extended her team-leading hit streak to 10 games with an RBI single in the second contest.

In the first game Lewis' offense struck early, scoring three runs in the first inning. Vanek doubled two of the those runs home, and Paine brought Vanek home with a double.

The Flyers added one more run in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings. Vanek, who singled to start the fifth inning, scored on a double by Roney.

After Kalynn Russell tripled to lead off the sixth, Carla Musillo hit a sacrifice fly to center field to bring Russell home.

Roney's RBI single in seventh scored Yudys, who doubled to leadoff the inning.

It was more of the same in the second game for the Flyers' offense, as they scored four times in the first inning. Yusko, Roney, Paine and Gartland each collected RBI singles in the frame.

The Flyers added more in the second inning thanks to a two-RBI single by Roney, and they scored two more times in the top of the sixth due to a pair of UMSL: errors in the inning.

The Flyers return to action on Saturday when they play their home opener, a doubleheader, against Kentucky Wesleyan at Noon.
