ROMEOVILLE, Ill. - Carla Musillo (Carol Stream, Ill./Glenbard North)'s three-run home run was the difference for the Lewis Flyers (16-4) in a 4-1 win in the opener of a doubleheader with Saginaw Valley State University (10-16), Sunday afternoon in regional action at the Lewis Softball Field.

Lewis fell 10-9 in the second game, which saw both teams club out 14 hits.

Musillo's home run, her second in as many days, came with two on and two out in the bottom of the fourth inning of the first game.

Courtney Lyons (6-2) picked up the win, going 4 1/3 innings with five hits, one run and four strikeouts, and Julie Wingerter notched her first save of the season, pitching 2 2/3 innings without allowing a hit. Wingerter struck out four batters, including the last two hitters of the game.

Trailing 7-5 in the second game, the Flyers put together a two-out rally for four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning.

Lisa Gartland ignited the rally with a two-run home run, the first of her collegiate career, to tie the game at 7-7. Robin Martz singled Shannon Roney home with the go-ahead run by ripping a liner off the first baseman's glove later in the inning, and a grounder through the legs of the Saginaw Valley third baseman allowed the Flyers' fourth run to score.

Unfortunately for the Flyers, the lead didn't last.

The Cardinals scored once in the sixth inning, and then with two outs in the seventh Stacy Kraatz nailed her second home run of the game, a two-run shot, to put the Cardinals back in front for good.

Wingerter (4-1) suffered the loss, while Saginaw Valley's Lorelea Rice came on in the bottom of the seventh to pick up the save.

Roney, who went a perfect 4-for-4 in the second game, was 5-for-6 with two runs, one RBI and three stolen bases for the afternoon. Mallory Paine went 4-for-6 with three doubles, three runs and three RBI, and Kelly Dianis had a 4-for-7 day with a double, one run and one RBI.

The Flyers play next on Thursday with a doubleheader at Robert Morris College (Springfield, Ill.) at 2 pm.
