KISSIMMEE, Fla. -
When Robin Martz roped an RBI double down the right field line in the second inning of the Lewis Flyers' 9-6 win over Ferris State on Sunday afternoon, she looked puzzled as she stood on second base and saw all her teammates hurry out of the dugout to applaud her.
But when Flyers' coaches George DiMatteo and Joan Gorski met Martz at second base with the game ball, the reactions of Martz's teammates started to make sense.
Martz's double was her 212th career hit, passing Helen Kelliher on Lewis' all-time list.
"Robin is the only one who didn't know what she just accomplished," DiMatteo said. "That's very typical of the type of player Robin is. She always puts the team ahead of herself and doesn't pay much attention to individual records.
"I'm very proud of Robin and happy she was able to get the record with a solid hit in a key situation," DiMatteo added. "This will be a very difficult record to beat."
Martz's double was her second hit in as many innings against the Bulldogs, as the Flyers wasted no time in climbing out of an early two-run hole.
After the Bulldogs scored two runs in the first inning, the Flyers responded with a four-spot in their half of the first and two more runs in the second.
Two Flyer errors in the top of the third inning resulted in three more Ferris State runs, but Mallory Paine (Carol Stream, Ill./Glenbard North)'s solo home run to straight-away center field in the bottom half the same inning put Lewis in front 7-5.
The Flyers added an insurance run in the fourth and one more in the fifth inning, after Ferris scored in the top of the frame.
Paine went 3-for-3 with three RBI and runs scored. Martz finished 2-for-4 with one RBI, and Amy Yusko went 1-for-3 with two RBI. Christina Willis (2-for-3, RBI), Carla Musillo (2-for-3) and Courtney Lyons (1-for-2, RBI) also factored in the win.
Shannon Roney, who was 2-for-4 with a RBI, tossed her second complete game in as many days to earn her second win of the season.
In earlier action on Sunday, the Flyers defeated Stonehill University 5-2.
Trailing 2-0 in the top of the fourth inning, Kalynn Russell put the Flyers up front 4-2 with a two-RBI single into center field.
Beth Shelus (2-for-4), Kristy Vanek (2-for-3, BB, RBI) Roney (2-for-4) also contributed for the Flyers.
Julie Wingerter secured her first collegiate win, as she struckout seven Stonehill hitters over 42/3 innings. Courtney Lyons added three more strikeouts in 21/3 innings of relief to earn her first save of the season.
The Flyers return to action on Monday evening with games against South Dakota (4:10 pm) and C.W. Post (6:00 pm).
