ROMEOVILLE - Outstanding pitching performances by Joe Walsh and Tim Harmatys were not enough for the Lewis University baseball team on Saturday, as the Flyers dropped a Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader to Bellarmine, 1-0 and 2-1, at Brennan Field.

Walsh (0-6), who lowered his team-leading earned-run average to 3.05, went the distance in the scheduled seven-inning opener that was extended to eight innings. He struck out a career-high 10, tying the season best by a Flyer, and allowed just five hits and three walks. Bellarmine's game-winning run in the eighth was unearned.

Bellarmine's Nate Nevin (4-2) fanned 11, walked two and gave five hits in seven innings. Michael Thompson pitched a perfect eighth to record his first save.

In the seven-inning nightcap, Harmatys (2-2) went all the way and shaved his ERA to 3.93 by yielding just one earned run. He allowed five hits and struck out three.

After Bellarmine (14-11, 9-8 GLVC) took a 1-0 lead in the second, Lewis (3-23, 2-16 GLVC) pulled even in the fifth. Billy Duffy led off with a single, advanced to second on Kevin Tyrrell (Naperville, Ill./Montini)'s sacrifice and scored on Darryl Jenkins (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield)' double.

Bellarmine tallied its unearned winning run in the seventh.

Knights' starter Micah McNatt allowed four hits and struck out five in five innings. Derek Mattingly (2-0) issued only a walk and fanned two in two relief innings.

The teams complete the weekend series with another doubleheader on Sunday. Starting time has been moved up an hour to 11 a.m. in an effort to avoid rain that is forecast for later in the day.
