ROLLA, Mo. - Five players had at least one RBI, and Joe Walsh pitched four strong relief innings to lift the Lewis University baseball team to an 8-6 win over Missouri-Rolla Saturday in game one of a Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader.

Missouri-Rolla won the nightcap 6-1 behind the four-hit pitching of Tavish Hill.

The Flyers (5-33, 4-26 GLVC) pounded out 12 hits in the seven-inning opener. Billy Duffy, Phil Marchinski, Darryl Jenkins and Victor Naut, the first four hitters in the lineup, each had two hits.

Lewis jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first on Jenkins' RBI single that followed a walk to Duffy and Marchinski's sacrifice.

After Missouri-Rolla (8-26, 6-21 GLVC) scored twice in the second, the Flyers tallied three unearned runs in the third, all with two outs. Naut delivered an RBI double, and Brandon Niewinski plated the second run with a single. Lewis made it 4-2 when Niewinski aborted a steal attempt, got in a rundown and avoided being tagged out before Naut crossed the plate.

The Miners scored single runs in the third and fourth to pull even, only to see the Flyers reclaim the lead in the fifth on Naut's RBI single that followed singles by Marchinski and Jenkins.

In the sixth, Lewis assembled a three-run rally that proved to be vital. Tim Bingham led off with a single, moved to third on an errant pickoff throw and scored on Kevin Tyrrell (Naperville, Ill./Montini)'s bunt single. Tyrrell advanced to third on a sacrifice and a ground ball and scored on Duffy's two-out single. Marchinski followed with a single, and Duffy scored on an error to boost the Lewis lead to 8-4.

Walsh (1-8) retired the first two batters in the seventh before issuing a walk. An error prolonged the inning and led to a pair of unearned runs, but with the bases loaded, Walsh fanned Zac Thompson to end the game.

Walsh allowed just one hit, struck out four and walked three in his four innings of work. Andrew Draper (2-3) took the loss.

In game two, the Flyers scored their only run in the first. Marchinski doubled with one out, advanced to third on Jenkins' single and scored on Naut's fielder's choice.

Tim Harmatys (2-4) suffered the loss but deserved a better fate. Five of the six runs allowed by the sophomore right-hander were unearned; he yielded seven hits and no walks while fanning six in five innings. Jon Crettol tossed two scoreless relief innings and Matt Andrzejewski pitched a scoreless eighth.

Jenkins registered two of the four hits off Hill (3-1), who struck out five and did not walk a batter.

The teams meet in another doubleheader Sunday. Game time is noon.
