Billy Duffy drove home the winning run with an eighth-inning sacrifice fly, and Joe Walsh worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the bottom of the eighth to preserve a 3-2 Lewis victory over Southern Indiana in game one of Saturday's Great Lakes Valley Conference baseball doubleheader.
Southern Indiana earned a split in the nightcap, scoring four first-inning runs en route to a 7-1 win.
After USI drew first blood with a run in the fifth inning of the opener, Lewis (8-36, 7-29 GLVC) took the lead with two unearned runs in the sixth when Phil Marchinski delivered a two-out, two-run single.
But the Screaming Eagles (18-26, 15-25 GLVC) pulled even in the bottom of the sixth with an unearned run of their own off Lewis starter Adam Stabosz. That tally would force the scheduled seven-inning game to go extra frames.
Jim Gabriel was hit by a pitch to lead off the decisive Lewis eighth inning. Sam Sacco, pinch-running for Gabriel, moved to second on Ryan Reynolds (Chicago, Ill./Gordon Tech)' sacrifice and to third on Ryan Duran (Glendale Heights, Ill./Driscoll)'s infield single to set up Duffy's game-winning sac fly to left field.
Walsh (2-9), who did not allow a hit in 2 2/3 innings of relief, pitched around two walks and an error in the USI eighth to preserve the victory. Stabosz turned in a strong start, allowing two runs (one earned) and six hits while striking out four in 5 1/3 innings. USI's Nathan Arnold (2-5) went the distance, fanning three and yielding six hits and a walk.
Duffy was 2-for-3 for the Flyers, who won for a fifth time in eight games including three one-run victories.
In game two, Lewis plated its only run in the sixth. Victor Naut, who was 2-for-3, doubled with two outs and scored on Tim Bingham (Plainfield, Ill./Westland, Mi./John Glenn)'s double.
Adam Summers (4-2) went the seven-inning distance for USI. Summers struck out four and allowed six hits and a walk. Tim Harmatys (2-5) suffered the loss.
Lewis and USI play another twinbill Sunday beginning at noon.
