Shannon Roney (Wheaton, Ill./Glenbard South)'s fourth home run in the last five games capped a 21-hit, 17-run offensive explosion for the Lewis Flyers in a 9-0 (five innings) and 8-1 doubleheader sweep of Bellarmine, Saturday afternoon in Great Lakes Valley Conference action at the Lewis Softball Field.
The Flyers improved to 31-9 (14-5 GLVC), while Bellarmine fell to 22-27-1 (5-13 GLVC).
Roney's home run, a three-run shot in the bottom of the sixth inning of game two, was her third hit of the afternoon. She finished the afternoon 3-for-6 with four RBI (all in game two) and two runs scored.
Julie Wingerter (12-3) notched the complete-game shutout in the opener, allowing only three hits with six strikeouts. Bellarmine's Lindsey Mitchell (2-4) suffered the loss.
Courtney Lyons (9-5) scattered six hits and allowed one earned run, a pinch-hit home run off the bat of Kim Locke in the fifth inning, to pick up the win for the Flyers in game two. She fanned three and walked only two. Bellarmine's Claire Hortsman (10-10) took the loss.
Ashley LeGrand put the Flyers on the board in the second inning of the first game with an RBI single, and then the flood gates opened in the third. Lewis sent 13 batters to plate in an inning that saw the Flyers string together nine hits for eight runs with Amy Yusko (Streator, Ill./Streator)'s RBI double serving as the only extra-base hit of the frame.
Kelly Dianis had two RBI singles in the inning. LeGrand and Christina Willis also had RBI singles in the frame.
The Flyers scored first in game two when Kristy Vanek singled home Dianis in the first inning. The game stayed 1-0 until the top of the fifth when Locke sent of line-drive home run off the scoreboard in left field.
The Flyers answered in their half of the fifth with three runs to re-take the lead. With Willis and Mallory Paine aboard at second and third, Dianis dragged a bunt on the right side of the infield. Bellarmine's pitcher fielded the bunt but air-mailed the throw to first, and Willis and Paine scored. Roney brought Dianis home a couple of at-bats later with a single down the left field line.
An RBI single by Vanek and the three-run home by Roney put the game out of reach in the bottom half of the sixth inning.
Vanek finished the afternoon 3-for-6 with two RBI and one run. Dianis (two RBI), LeGrand (two RBI), Paine, Willis (RBI), Amy Yusko (RBI), Lisa Gartland and Robin Martz each collected two hits for the day.
For Bellarmine, Allison Blesser was 2-for-2 in the opener and Adrienne Price went 2-for-3 in the second game. Anna Mehr and Jorie Doll hit doubles in the second game.
