ROMEOVILLE, Ill. -
Home runs by Robin Martz, Kelly Dianis, Mallory Paine and Lisa Gartland accounted for four of the Lewis Flyers' 30 hits in a 10-6 and 12-3 doubleheader sweep of Saint Xavier, Tuesday afternoon in non-conference play at the Lewis Softball Field.
The Flyers improved to 34-10, while the Cougars fell to 31-11 for the season. Gartland (7-0) picked up the win in the first game, and Courtney Lyons (10-5) earned the complete-game victory in the five-inning nightcap.
Martz went 5-for-6 for the afternoon, including 4-for-4 in the opener, and she stole four bases. Dianis was 5-of-6 with five RBI, hitting a triple and a double along with her homer. Paine went 5-for-7 with five RBI, and Gartland had 3-for-7 day with three RBI.
Amy Yusko had a 3-for-7 day with a double and four RBI, while Beth Shelus, Christina Willis and Kalynn Russell each added two hits. Kristy Vanek sat out the first game but went 2-for-3 with an RBI in game two.
The Cougars scored first in the opener when Colleen Kilduff belted a solo home run to center field in the first inning. The Flyers answered with two runs in their half of the first, thanks to RBI singles from Gartland and Yusko.
The Flyers' lead was short-lived as Kilduff connected again in the third inning, this time for a grand slam, to give the Cougars a 5-2 advantage.
Lewis fired right back in the bottom of the third, scoring four times thanks to a three-run shot from Dianis and solo blast by Gartland. The Flyers padded their lead in the fourth when Paine ripped a three-run shot over the fence in left center.
Saint Xavier tallied three first-inning runs in game two, but saw that lead disappear for good when the Flyers scored four in the bottom half of the inning. Martz led-off with a solo home run to right field, and Shelus doubled in Russell with the go-ahead run later in the inning.
The Flyers went on to add three more in the second, one in the third and four in fourth en route to the run-rule victory.
Lyons struck out seven in the game and allowed just one hit past the first inning.
The Flyers play again tomorrow when they travel for a doubleheader at Saint Joseph's at 3 pm.
