RENSSELAER, Ind. - Just two days after being named conference Player of the Week, Mallory Paine continued her hot streak at the plate, hitting a home run and a triple for the Lewis Flyers (36-10, 18-6) in a 4-0 and 3-2 doubleheader sweep of Saint Joseph's College (25-15, 8-8) Wednesday afternoon in Great Lakes Valley Conference action.

Paine's solo home run in the top of the fourth inning of game one broke a scoreless tie and proved to be all the offense Lewis needed.

In game two, Paine busted a 1-1 tie with a RBI triple in the top of the seventh. Kelly Dianis (Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale Central)' sacrifice fly in the next at-bat scored Paine with what ended up being the winning run.

Julie Wingerter (13-4) provided a dominating five-hit, complete-game effort for the win in the opener. She struck out four while walking just one.

Courtney Lyons (11-5) went the distance in game two, allowing two runs on six hits. She fanned six, walked three and didn't allow a hit until the fifth inning.

Ashley Heatwole (10-8) struck out six of the first 10 Lewis batters in the game one before yielding the home run to Paine in the fourth. She ended up pitching the whole game, striking out a total of 11 batters, but she was tagged for three more runs in the seventh.

Beth Shelus scored the first run when stole third and advanced home on a throwing error by the catcher. Lisa Gartland singled home Ashley LeGrand with the second run, and Amy Yusko knocked an RBI double for the third run of the inning.

Game two evolved into another pitcher's duel, but the Flyers finally broke through in the sixth. Yusko singled in Kristy Vanek, who walked and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Wingerter, for the game's first run.

Saint Joseph's answered with a single tally in the bottom half of the inning, but the Flyers came right back in the seventh.

Miscommunication in the Saint Joseph's infield on a pop fly allowed Robin Martz to reach first with one out. Martz stole second and third with Paine at the plate and then trotted home with the Flyers' second run when Paine ripped a triple to right field.

A solo home run by Jill Kapitan cut the Flyers' lead to one in the bottom of the seventh, but that's as close as Saint Joseph's could get. A double followed by a sacrifice bunt put the tying run on third, but Yusko gunned down that runner at the plate on a grounder for the second out. The final batter flied out to left field.

Paine finished the afternoon 2-for-6 with two RBI. Yusko was 2-for-7 with two RBI and Kalynn Russell went 2-for-4.

The Flyers return to action on Saturday with a doubleheader at Saint Xavier at Noon.
