INDIANAPOLIS -
Brandon Niewinski drove in all three Lewis runs in the Flyers' 5-3 loss to Indianapolis in game two of Wednesday's Great Lakes Valley Conference baseball doubleheader.
In the opener, Tony Payne tossed a one-hitter as Indianapolis downed Lewis 6-0.
Indianapolis (18-10, 15-10 GLVC) scored twice in each of the first two innings to take a 4-0 lead in the nightcap.
Lewis (3-27, 2-20 GLVC) tallied a run in the seventh when Darryl Jenkins led off with a single, advanced to third on an error and a sacrifice and scored on Niewinski's sacrifice fly.
The Greyhounds got that run back in the bottom of the seventh and led 5-1 heading into the ninth. The Flyers put together a Victor Naut single, a pinch-hit double by Ryan Reynolds and Niewinski's two-run single to cut their deficit in half, but Indy reliever Matt Hayes came on to get the final two outs on a double play for his first save.
Lewis starter Matt Rolle (0-3) fanned five and walked only one in five innings but suffered the loss. Tim Harmatys pitched a scoreless inning, and Ryan Duran allowed an unearned run and no hits in a two-inning relief stint. Indy starter Keith Hatfield (5-0) gave seven hits and no walks in 8 1/3 innings.
In the seven-inning opener, Kevin Tyrrell (Naperville, Ill./Montini)'s first-inning single was the only hit off Payne (2-1), who walked two and struck out eight. Adam Stabosz (2 1/3 perfect innings) and Tommy Rawski (two innings, one hit) pitched well in relief of Joe Walsh (0-7).
The Flyers host Southern Illinois Edwardsville in a pair of GLVC doubleheaders Saturday and Sunday at Silver Cross Field in downtown Joliet. Game time both days is noon.
