ROMEOVILLE, Ill. -
Ashley LeGrand (Grafton, Wis./Hononegah)'s first home run of the season, a pinch-hit rocket to straight-away center field in the bottom of the eighth inning, lifted the Lewis Flyers (22-6, 8-2) to a 4-3 win in game 2 of a conference doubleheader against Rockhurst (9-25, 1-11) Saturday afternoon.
Robin Martz went yard in the bottom of the sixth inning of the first game, a two-run tally, to power the Flyers to a 10-1 run-rule victory.
LeGrand's game-winning homer was Lewis' fifth round-tripper of the afternoon.
Down 2-1 in the bottom of the fourth inning of the second game, Kelly Dianis made it 2-2 with a leadoff home run, and Lisa Gartland gave Lewis the lead two at-bats later with a solo liner over the fence in left center.
Gartland also launched a three-run bomb in the Flyers' six-run sixth inning in game 1, finishing the day 3-for-6 with three runs and five RBI.
Julie Wingerter (9-1), the conference's ERA leader, picked up the win in both games. She went the distance in the opener, allowing just two hits while striking out seven batters, and she pitched a scoreless eighth inning with one strikeout in game two.
Courtney Lyons worked three innings of scoreless relief in game two. After Rockhurst tied the game 3-3 in the top of the fifth inning, Lyons came in for starter Shannon Roney and ended up striking out five hitters before giving way to Wingerter in the eighth.
Mallory Paine and Dianis each doubled in game 1. Carla Musillo doubled in the third inning of the second game and eventually scored on an infield single by Paine.
Rockhurst's lone run in the first game came from a home run off the bat of Jill Krawczyk. Kelli Vanderwell and Sarah Sooter each homered for the Hawks in game 2.
The Flyers return to action on Sunday with a home doubleheader against Missouri-Rolla at Noon.
