ROMEOVILLE, Ill. -
A pair of goals from Jenna Volpi helped the Lewis Flyers to their first win of the season, a 3-1 decision over St. Francis Tuesday afternoon in non-conference action at the Lewis Soccer Field.
Volpi's first goal came at 40:21 and broke a 1-1 tie to put Lewis in control. She added an insurance marker at 75:18, taking a feed from Amy Foran and blasting it up and around the St. Francis keeper to hit the far side of the net.
Lewis tallied the game's first goal when Heather Ywaniw buried a shot, unassisted, past a diving St. Francis keeper at the 7:00 mark.
St. Francis answered with a goal at 25:48 as Lupe Proa took a pass from Toni Giovenco and ripped a shot just above the reach of Lewis keeper Lindsay Frederick, but that's all the offense the Saints would get.
The Flyers controlled the ball most of the second half, registering 22 of their 38 total shots in the second period.
St. Francis totaled 10 shots for the game, with only four on goal. The Flyers sent 19 shots on net.
Frederick grabbed three saves and improved to 1-1 on the season, while St. Francis goalkeeper Carrie Rojek made 16 saves and fell to 0-1.
The Flyers return to action on Friday when they host southern Indiana at 2:30 p.m. in the first conference game of the season.
