ROLLA, Mo. -
Showing no signs of a letdown following an emotional win over Southern Illinois Edwardsville last Sunday, the Lewis University men's soccer team scored three first-half goals and rolled to a 4-1 victory over Missouri-Rolla Friday night.
The Flyers, ranked No. 13 nationally in NCAA Division II and No. 2 in the Great Lakes Region, improved to 8-1 overall and 6-1 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. Lewis is in sole possession of second place in the GLVC behind 5-0-1 Drury.
Jorge De Jesus scored two of the Flyers' season-high four goals and also collected an assist, while Cory Mastey netted his team-leading sixth goal of the season and added a helper.
Anthony Marsico had a goal, Kipp Cartwright tallied his team-high fifth assist of the year and Craig McIntosh chipped in an assist for the Flyers, who extended their winning streak to four.
Mastey's penalty-kick goal at 3:49 got Lewis on the board early. Marsico's fourth goal of the campaign (De Jesus, McIntosh) at 33:13 made it 2-0, and De Jesus (Cartwright) gave the Flyers a 3-0 halftime cushion with his first goal of the season at 43:44.
Zach Crane's penalty-kick goal at 60:50 was the only bright spot for Missouri-Rolla (4-5, 2-2 GLVC). De Jesus (Mastey) answered at the 73:16 mark to complete the scoring.
Lewis goalkeeper Anthony Szymel recorded a career high in saves for a second consecutive game. Szymel made eight stops, one more than he collected in the 1-0 win over SIU Edwardsville.
The Flyers conclude the road trip Sunday at Missouri-St. Louis. Game time is noon.
