ROMEOVILLE, Ill. -
The Lewis Flyers' physical and aggressive approach succeeded in frustrating the third-place Bellarmine Knights, but freshman goalkeeper Rebekah Westendorf succeeded in keeping the Flyers off the scoreboard, in a 1-0 decision Friday afternoon in a conference game at the Lewis Soccer Field.
Trailing by a goal, Lewis took a one-player advantage on Bellarmine when the Knights' Jaime Halas, their leading scorer, drew a red card in the game's 67th minute. The extra body provided the Flyers with some prime scoring chances, but Westendorf was up to the challenge.
The Flyers best chance to even the score came in the 73rd minute on a Courtney Kettel shot that banged off the center of the crossbar. The rebound fell in front of Amy Foran, but her tip-in attempt was denied by Westendorf.
Westendorf collected 10 saves for the game for her fourth shutout of the season.
The game's only goal came in the first half at 23:52 when Bellarmine's Lindsey Scheer deflected a corner kick from MacKenzie Prather past Lewis goalie Lindsay Frederick, who had eight saves on the afternoon.
The Flyers and Knights were even on total shots at 18 apiece, with Lewis sending 10 on goal, compared to nine by the Knights.
Lewis was whistled for 14 fouls, with 10 of those occurring in the second half. Bellarmine had 10 fouls. The Knights took eight corner shots while limiting the Flyers to three for the game.
The Flyers fell to 2-10-0 (1-7-0) while the Knights improved to 7-3-0 (6-2-0).
Lewis plays its final home game of the season on Sunday, hosting Northern Kentucky for Senior Day at 2:30 p.m.
