ROMEOVILLE, Ill. -
Brandon Dagans, Jason Genova and Stephan Bolt scored 69 of Lewis University's 84 points Saturday in the Flyers' 84-74 Great Lakes Valley Conference triumph over Kentucky Wesleyan.
Dagans was 10-of-14 from the floor, including 3-of-5 from 3-point range, and netted a game-high 28 points. Genova (9-of-15 overall, 4-of-9 3-pointers) scored 24, and Bolt (8-of-16) tallied 17 for the Flyers (11-8, 6-5), who shot a season-best .569.
Matthew Marino collected a career-high and team season-high 11 assists, and Bolt led all players with 12 rebounds. Bolt's double-double is the 12th of his career and fourth in five games, and his double-digit rebounding total is the 16th of his career.
Kentucky Wesleyan (8-10, 1-10) led 10-4 early with the help of two 3-pointers by Rodney Edgerson, who Thursday at Wisconsin-Parkside set an NCAA Division II record with a 10-of-10 performance from beyond the arc.
All five starters scored during a 14-4 run that put the Flyers on top for good, 18-14, with 13:15 left in the first half. Later, a 14-3 surge that included three Genova treys gave Lewis its largest first-half lead, 39-26, before the Flyers settled for a 43-31 halftime advantage.
Lewis, which blistered the nets at a .615 clip in the second half, enjoyed its biggest cushion of 15 points twice before Kentucky Wesleyan made things a bit more interesting. The Panthers trailed 75-68 with 3:11 remaining, only to see a Bolt basket and four Dagans free throws put Lewis up 81-69 at the 1:42 mark.
Donte Williams hit a 3-pointer and Jeff Fahnbulleh followed with two free throws to make it 81-74 with 1:12 left. KWC had a chance to pull closer following two missed free throws by Lewis, but the Panthers misfired on three attempts during their next possession.
Genova made a layup on the other end, and the Lewis defense stopped Kentucky Wesleyan once more to secure the win.
Dagans had five assists, and Genova tied his season high of four assists while collecting five rebounds. Marino had just one turnover to go with his 11 assists as Lewis committed a season-low six giveaways.
Fahnbulleh and Edgerson topped the Kentucky Wesleyan scoring chart with 21 points apiece, and Williams added 12 points and a team-high four assists. Fahnbulleh grabbed eight rebounds to lead the Panthers, who earned a 34-30 edge on the boards.
Lewis begins a four-game road swing Thursday at Indianapolis.
