No. 21 Bellarmine No Match For Surging Flyers

ROMEOVILLE, Ill. - For a second consecutive game Darcee Schmidt reached 30 points, and for a second consecutive game the Flyers defeated a ranked opponent.

Schmidt's 33 points carried Lewis past No. 21 Bellarmine 76-57, Thursday evening in a Great Lakes Valley Conference game at Neil Carey Arena.

The Flyers won for the fifth straight game and improved to 11-2 (4-1) for the team's best start since the 1999-2000 season. Bellarmine, which had its three-game win streak snapped, dropped to 9-3 (2-2).

Schmidt was unstoppable from the start, hitting a 3-pointer for the game's first points and going on to score 14 of the Flyers first 18 points to give Lewis an 18-11 lead at the 12:47 mark. Schmidt finished the half with 23 points, which included matching a career high with five 3-pointers, and Lewis headed into halftime with a 44-29 lead.

The Flyers' lead was never threatened after halftime, as the Knights couldn't get any closer than the 15-point advantage Lewis opened with in the second half. The Flyers' 19-point margin of victory served as Lewis' largest lead of the night.

Schmidt, who on Tuesday was named GLVC Player of the Week, shot 12-of-18 from the floor, with the five 3-pointers, and she made all four shots she took from the free throw line. She also had three rebounds, three assists and one block.

Mary Moskal added 14 points on 5-of-9 shooting from the floor and 4-of-4 from the line. She also registered four rebounds, four assists and four steals. Erin Cox chipped in nine points with four boards and four assists and one block, and Jenna Mooberry scored seven points and had a team-best five rebounds.

Bellarmine was led in scoring and rebounding by Dana Beaven with 18 points and seven boards. Angela Smith added 15 points, and Deasha Mondy had 11 points for the Knights.

Lewis shot 49.1 percent for the game, compared to 39 percent by the Knights. Bellarmine won the rebound battle 34-29. The Flyers went 13-of-14 at the line, while the Knights were 6-of-11.

Lewis returns to action on Saturday, hosting No. 18 Northern Kentucky at 1 pm.
