ROMEOVILLE, Ill. -
A late score by sophomore Jessica McNamara forced a 1-1 double overtime tie against No. 17 Drury in a Great Lakes Valley Conference game Friday afternoon.
With less than five minutes remaining it looked like the Flyers were going to fall to No. 17 Drury, but Lewis continued to attack. Junior Bethanee Taylor attempted a shot from the right side that Drury goalkeeper Jessie Sanderson couldn't control. With the ball free in front of the goal McNamara slammed it home for the tying tally at 85:59. It was McNamara's first career goal and Taylor's first assist of the season. Taylor has seven points on the season.
It was just the sixth goal scored against Sanderson this year. Entering the game she led the GLVC in goals against average (0.39) and shutouts (7).
Sanderson showed why she is one of the best in the first half by making two key saves on solid Lewis scoring chances.
At 11:01 junior Courtney Kettel found freshman Jessica Summers-Hernandez open near the top of the box. Summers-Hernandez struck a beautiful shot into the top right corner but Sanderson deflected it over the crossbar before it could find the back of the net.
At 25:03 Sanderson made a diving save to deflect a shot by junior Caitlin Kelly.
The saves ensured the game would stay tied at halftime after a first half controlled by Lewis. For the period, Lewis out-shot Drury (7-4) and held the edge in corner kicks (4-1).
In the second period Drury scored their only tally at 74:03 on a breakaway goal by Kelsy Long.
It would be the only goal freshman Megan George would give up in her first collegiate start. Not to be outdone by Sanderson, George made several im a clutch one-on-one save against Emily West at 69:54. West attempted to chip a shot over George's head but she was able to swat it away and keep the game scoreless. George finished the game with seven saves.
Lewis out-shot Drury 5-2 in the overtime periods and solid defense prevented Drury from registering a single shot on goal.
McNamara and sophomore Erin Beddows each recorded a shot on goal in the first overtime for Lewis.
It was the first tie for Lewis in over two years. The last Lewis tie was against the same Drury team in the 2005 GLVC opener on Sept. 9.
Lewis moved to 5-9-1 (3-7-1 GLVC) while Drury moved to 10-3-2 (6-2-2 GLVC).
Lewis hosts GLVC rival Rockhurst on Sunday at noon.
