ROMEOVILLE, Ill. -
Trailing 2-1 at halftime with a four-game win streak on the line, the Lewis Flyers rallied for two second-half goals to come back and beat No. 21 Rockhurst 3-2, Sunday afternoon in a crucial conference game at the Lewis Soccer Field.
Freshmen Mardoche Beya scored the game-winner for Lewis, as he was able to knock in a loose ball through heavy traffic right in front of the net at 65:48. The play was setup on a Lewis free kick. Senior Anthony Marsico booted the ball into the box from the right side of the field about 20 yards out, and after a couple of deflections, Beya was able to get his foot on the ball and send it into the back of the net - much to the delight of a boisterous crowd of several hundred Flyer fans in attendance for Spirit Day.
Lewis tied the game 2-2 when sophomore Nestor Hernandez headed a ball past Rockhurst goalkeeper Chad Becker at 52:36. Another Lewis free kick from just outside the penalty box set up the score. Sophomore Kipp Cartwright sent the ball in on the free kick. A Rockhurst defender was able to get his head on the ball, but it went straight up instead of out of the goal box. Hernandez put his head on it as it came back down and the ball shot just out of the reach of Becker. The goal was Hernandez's fifth in as many games
Lewis opened the game with a 1-0 lead when Jorge De Jesus scored his fourth goal in as many games at 9:14. Beya had the assist.
Rockhurst tied the game and took then took the lead with a pair of goals scored 58 seconds apart. Tom Heinemann notched an unassisted tally at 32:08, and then at 33:06, Haggai Leboo kicked in a rebound off an Adam Johnson shot which banged off the left post. The goal came at 33:06.
Rockhurst out-shot Lewis 13-12 for the game, but junior goalkeeper Anthony Szymel made five saves for the Flyers to earn the win.
The Flyers improved to 12-4 (8-4 GLVC) with their season-long five game win streak. It's the Flyers' longest win streak since a five game run near the end of the 2005-06 season.
Lewis hosts Wisconsin-Parkside in the Flyers' regular-season home finale on Thursday at 4:00 p.m.
