ROMEOVILLE, Ill. -
Senior Anthony Marsico scored his third goal of the season and junior Anthony Szymel posted his fourth shutout as No. 23 Lewis won its sixth-straight game, a 1-0 decision over Wisconsin-Parkside Friday afternoon in the Flyers' final conference game of the season.
Lewis improved to 13-4 (9-4 GLVC), winning six consecutive games for the first time since the 2003 team posted a seven-game win streak. The Flyers' nine conference wins are the most since the 2001 team went 9-0-1 in league play.
As has been the case for the past several games, Lewis got on the board early, scoring at 17:09 of the first half. A throw-in by sophomore Alex Koprowski deep in the Rangers' end led to Marsico's goal.
Koprowski was positioned on the right sideline about 10 yards in front of the goal line. He heaved the ball out in front of the goal, and after a miss by one Lewis player, the ball rolled untouched to the left side of the box. Marsico, who was charging in on the play, had a clear shot and connected with a well-struck ball into the back left corner of the net.
Szymel stopped five shots en route to the shutout, including a diving save in the game's 78th minute.
Lewis nearly made it 2-0 late in the game when, in a flurry of activity off a corner kick, three Flyers fired from close range. Parkside goalie Victor Perez stopped the first two shots before the third sailed wide right and out of bounds. Perez totaled five saves for the game.
A total of 43 fouls were called in the game with 20 whistled on Lewis. The Rangers were issued four yellow cards. Lewis had one. The Flyers held a 19-9 advantage in total shots, including a 9-2 edge in the second half.
The Flyers conclude regular-season play with a non-conference tilt at Truman State on Sunday.
