INDIANAPOLIS -
In an impressive 30-22, 30-27, 30-22 sweep the Flyers defeated Indianapolis, ranked No. 17 nationally and No. 1 in the Great Lakes Region, Saturday afternoon in a Great Lakes Valley Conference match.
The Lewis victory stopped Indianapolis' 25 match-win streak and moved the Flyers a match and a half behind the Greyhounds in the GLVC East Division. Lewis improved to 24-3 (14-2) while Indianapolis, suffering their first conference defeat, fell to 28-2 (16-1).
The Flyers dominated from the first serve, out-hitting the Greyhounds .333 to .171. The Flyers recorded the highest hitting percentage by an Indianapolis opponent since Southern Illinois Edwardsville hit .383 against Indianapolis on Oct. 23, 2004. The last time Indianapolis was swept by a GLVC opponent at home was five years ago, when Lewis swept the Greyhounds on Oct. 26, 2002.
Senior Andrea Morrone had a solid all-around match. She recorded a match-high 48 assists, a season-high for a three-game match, nine digs and seven kills.
Sophomore Stephanie Sagat had a match-high 14 kills. She and freshman Lauren Seliga each had 12 digs. Seliga also recorded nine kills.
Sophomore Kim Richards recorded 13 kills.
Freshman Ashlee Lindish had 19 digs.
The Flyers took control of game one with a 5-0 run after Indianapolis tied the game at 18. Junior Lauren Hatter recorded two aces during the run.
After Indianapolis scored the first point of game two, Lewis responded to take a 15-10 lead. The Greyhounds rallied multiple times to get within one point of the Flyers but Lewis was able to hold off the Indianapolis attack.
Lewis jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the third game but the Greyhounds came back to tie the game at eight. With the game tied, the match became the definition of a back-and-forth affair with neither team scoring back-to-back points for the next 13 serves. After Indianapolis took a 20-18 lead it looked like the Greyhounds may force a game four. But the Flyers posted a 10-2 run to close out the match. Junior Justina Begemann posted a solo block, an assisted block and a kill in the final run.
Lewis out-blocked Indianapolis (8-4) and held a 64-40 edge in digs.
The Flyers travel to Wisconsin-Parkside on Tuesday before returning home to face Bellarmine on Friday and Northern Kentucky on Saturday. The matches will close their regular season schedule.
