ROMEOVILLE, Ill. - After falling behind early, No. 15 Lewis scored three unanswered goals and did not allow another shot on goal in a 3-1 victory over Bellarmine, Sunday afternoon in a Great Lakes Valley Conference quarterfinal at the Lewis Soccer Field.

Bellarmine (12-9-0) scored the game's first goal when Brad Barraclough took a cross from Andrew Coverstone and blasted it into the top left corner of the net at 11:51 of the first half. It was Barraclough's ninth goal of the season.

Lewis answered just before halftime by scoring on a penalty kick at 41:45. A foul was called on the Knights' goalie, and senior Anthony Marsico converted on the free shot by sending the ball just out of the reach of the Bellarmine keeper.

The Flyers grabbed the lead in the opening minutes of the second half when sophomore Kipp Cartwright found the back of the net at 48:16 for his sixth goal of the season. Marsico provided an insurance tally at 72:43 with his second of the game and fifth of the season, firing one in from the right side 15 yards away.

Junior goalkeeper Anthony Szymel earned the win for the Flyers with a solid effort. He controlled a number of loose balls out in front of the net, despite taking a few hard hits in the process.

The Flyers out-shot the Knights 16-13, and held a dominating 10-1 advantage in shots on goal. Bellarmine managed eight shots in the second half, but six of those sailed high over the net, one went wide right and another was blocked.

Lewis was whistled for 18 fouls, compared to 11 by the Knights. The Flyers received four yellow cards. Bellarmine had two. Each team had five corner kicks.

The Flyers (15-4-0) increased their win streak to eight games and advanced to the GLVC semifinals where they will face Indianapolis on the campus of Northern Kentucky on Nov. 2 at 5 p.m. The winner of that game will play in the conference championship on Nov. 4.
