Freshman Jenny Turpel scored a game-high 20 points in her collegiate debut, but it wasn't enough as the Flyers fell to 70-63 to Lake Superior State in the GLVC/GLIAC Challenge on the campus of the University of Wisconsin-Parkside.
Turpel shot 58 percent of the floor and was 5-of-6 from the free throw line. She also added five rebounds, two steals and two assists.
Junior Kelly Dianis scored 11 points with six rebounds and four steals.
Freshman Carol Kruckman scored eight points, going 4-for-4 from the floor.
Defensively the Flyers forced 30 Lakers turnovers, registering 13 steals. Junior Jenna Mooberry recorded three steals.
The Flyers jumped out to an early 13-4 lead to start the game but Lake Superior State responded with a 14-6 run to get within one point of the Flyers. With the score tied at 26 with 37 seconds left in the first half the Lakers the final four points to take a 30-26 lead into halftime.
The Lakers quickly extended their lead to seven points on a Shalyn Beauchampf 3-pointer to open the second half. Dianis was quick to responded, draining a 3-pointer of her own to instigate a 10-0 Lewis run.
The Lakers responded with a 10-0 run of their own to pull away and take the season opener for both squads.
Lake Superior State's Katherine LaPrairie scored a team-high 15 points. Shalyn Beauchamp recorded 11 points and 10 rebounds.
The Flyers are back in action tomorrow against Michigan Tech at 1 p.m.
