Flyers Snatch Victory In Final Seconds

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Senior Stephan Bolt matched a career high with 28 points, hitting the game-winning jumper with just seven seconds remaining in regulation, and junior Jason Genova also tallied 28 points, as Lewis defeated Rockhurst 79-77, Saturday afternoon in Great Lakes Valley Conference action at Mason-Halpin Fieldhouse.

Bolt's game-winning shot, a five-footer from the right baseline, capped a 16-6 run which saw Lewis erase an eight-point deficit in the game's final five minutes. Moments earlier Bolt had tied the game on a layup and a free throw. He scored 19 of his 28 points in the second half, including six of Lewis' final eight points in the game.

The late comeback was the second time in the half Lewis had to climb out from a deep hole.

The Flyers trailed by as many as 19 points in the first half before going into halftime down 45-32. Lewis opened the second half on an 18-4 spurt, taking their first lead of the game at 14:06 with a layup from Bolt.

From there the teams exchanged the lead three more times before Rockhurst senior Joey Deas hit a 3-pointer and ignited the Hawks to a 10-3 run, resulting in a 71-63 Hawks' lead with 5:04 to play. Deas led Rockhurst with 27 points in the game.

Genova and Bolt were the only two Flyers to record double figures in scoring. Genova hit 12-of-23 from the floor with four 3-pointers. Three of those treys came in the second half. He also added eight boards, one block and one steal to compliment his season-best scoring effort.

Bolt collected 14 rebounds to go with his 28 points, reaching double-double territory for a fifth-straight game. He also had two blocks and one steal.

Senior Keelan Donald scored six points and five rebounds, and senior Brandon Alexander had four points and seven rebounds, scoring a key layup with 1:09 to play. Freshman Lonnie Lawrence, Jr. contributed three points, five rebounds and two blocks, and freshman Dennis Thomas, Jr. scored four points, three rebounds and three assists.

The Flyers shot 47.9 percent from the floor for the game, hitting at a 55.6-percent clip in the second half. Rockhurst was 45 percent from the field, boosted by a 10-of-19 effort from 3-point range. Lewis held a decisive 46-31 edge on the glass.

The Flyers (4-1, 1-1) return to action on Tuesday night when they play in their home opener against Trinity Christian at 7:30 p.m.
