KANSAS CITY, Mo. - A jumper by freshman Jenny Turpel at the buzzer lifted the Flyers to a 39-37 victory over Rockhurst in a Great Lakes Valley Conference game on Saturday afternoon.
With 10:04 remaining the Flyers trailed by 11 points and it looked like they may be heading to their first conference loss. However, relentless Lewis defense limited Rockhurst to just three points for the rest of the game and the Flyers rallied for the victory.
Down the stretch, junior Kelly Dianis scored 10 of the Flyers' final 16 points, including converting on a four-point play with 5:14 remaining. She also made a key jumper at 2:51 to give the Flyers their first lead since just over a minute into the second half.
Rockhurst tied the game at 1:01 after Erin Morrisey made one of two free throws. The game stayed tied until Turpel's heroics with no time remaining.
Turpel's shot gave the Flyers just their third lead and their largest lead of the game.
The Flyers scored 18 points off 29 Rockhurst turnovers. The Hawks scored eight points off of 20 Lewis turnovers. Lewis recorded a season-high 14 steals with senior Jennifer Green notching a career-high five.
Dianis recorded 12 points, six rebounds, three steals and two assists. Junior Lauren Martens notched a double-double with 11 points and a career-high 11 rebounds. Freshman Christine Karl and Turpel both scored six points.
Lewis shot 13-53 (25 percent) from the floor while limiting the Hawks to 13-44 (29.5 percent) shooting.
Amy Hake scored a game-high 12 points for Rockhurst.
The Flyers improved to 3-2 (2-0 GLVC) while Rockhurst fell to 1-4 (0-2 GLVC).
Lewis plays at Saint Xavier on Saturday.
