CHICAGO -
Three Flyers reached double figures to help Lewis upend Saint Xavier 77-69 Saturday afternoon in a non-conference road game.
The Flyers controlled the interior, holding a decisive 46-24 edge in points in the paint, 48-28 advantage in rebounds and 14-3 lead in second chance points.
Junior Lauren Martens recorded a team-high 16 points and grabbed 10 boards for her second straight double-double. Junior Kelly Dianis added 15 points, sinking 3-of-4 from long range, and eight rebounds. Freshman Jenny Turpel (Johnsburg, Ill./Johnsburg)'s 14 points highlighted a Flyers bench that out-scored Saint Xavier's reserves 25-11.
The Flyers controlled throughout with Saint Xavier never holding a lead. Saint Xavier trailed by one at half and recorded the only tie of the second half 36 seconds in on a free throw by Erin Hannemann. Lewis responded with a 9-2 run on a Turpel layup to grab a seven point lead. The Cougars called a timeout but it was the Flyers who came out of the stoppage on fire, grabbing an 11-point lead on a 3-pointer by freshman Kelly Monaco.
Saint Xavier got within three points at 6:04 on a jumper by Angie Bush but a 7-1 run by the Flyers quickly stymied the Cougars' comeback bid.
The Flyers shot 45.8 percent (33-72) from the floor while the Cougars finished the game at 43.1 percent (25-58). Hannemann had a game-high 21 points to lead Cougars. The win improves the Flyers to 4-2 while the Cougars dropped their first game of the season to fall to 6-1.
The Flyers are back in action next Saturday to face the Lady Saints of St. Francis on the road at 7:30 p.m.
