Flyers Fall In Five

ROMEOVILLE, Ill. - Up two games to none, it appeared the Lewis Flyers were on their way to snapping their seven-match losing streak to Loyola Chicago. Unfortunately for the Flyers, Ian Anderson and the Ramblers had other ideas.

Anderson collected 18 of his career-high 30 kills in games three through five combined, hitting .500 during the span, to lead the Ramblers to a 3-2 (28-30, 28-30, 30-27, 30-25, 15-12) comeback win over host Lewis Tuesday night in a Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association match.

Anderson's 30th kill of the night put Loyola Chicago ahead by two points (9-7) in game five, a margin the Flyers would not overcome. In game four, an Anderson kill put Loyola Chicago in front for good at 11-10.

Game three was tied 9-9 before consecutive errors by Lewis put the Ramblers ahead by two points. The Flyers prevented the Ramblers from pulling away and were as close as 25-24 before consecutive kills from James Grunst and Anderson allowed Loyola Chicago to take control.

Game two was tied 19-19 when a Craig Boller kill and a Drew Pickering ace put Lewis in front for good. A back-and-forth game one was tied 28-28 when a Loyola hitting error followed by a Pickering ace gave Lewis the win.

Jared Dayton led Lewis with 18 kills and set a career high with five aces. Pickering added 16 kills, hitting .393, and he had three aces. David Kelnhofer totaled 13 kills with four digs and three blocks (1BS-2BA).David Taylor (St. Louis, Mo./CBC) had a career-best 57 assists and led the Flyers with eight digs. Nick Perakes had seven digs, and Boller added eight kills and three aces.

Anderson was one of four Ramblers to reach double digits in kills. Nick Lamoureux had 14 kills, hitting .600, and recorded eight blocks (2BS-6BA). Joe Guntli hit 12 kills and added four digs and two solo blocks. Nathan Gustus registered 10 kills and had seven digs. Zach Bailey led all players with 15 digs.

The Ramblers hit .387 (79-26-137) and collected 12 blocks. The Flyers hit .260 (67-29-146), matching a season-high for total kills, and had 11 blocks. Lewis hit a season-best 11 service aces, while limiting the Ramblers to one.

The Flyers dropped to 7-3 (2-3), while Loyola Chicago improved to 7-3 (2-2).

The Flyers play at Mercyhurst on Friday.
