LOUISVILLE, Ky. -
Shutout pitching performances from Julie Wingerter and Jenna Howard carried the No. 20 Lewis Flyers to a pair of wins in a conference doubleheader against Bellarmine Sunday afternoon at Knights Field.
The Flyers (17-4, 6-0) beat the Knights (11-14, 2-6) 2-0 in game one and 1-0 in game two, not allowing a single runner past second the entire afternoon. Lewis also increased its win streak to 16 games.
Wingerter (5-1) pitched the Flyers to victory in game one, allowing only three hits while striking out five and walking none to pick up her first shutout of the season.
Carla Musillo put Lewis on the board in the sixth inning when she ripped an RBI double to center. Beth Shelus added an insurance run in the seventh when she hit home pinch-runner Carissa Castonzo from second with a sharp single to right center.
The Flyers scored in their first at-bat in game two when Mallory Paine dropped a squeeze bunt in front of home plate and Lisa Gartland raced home from third.
The run one was all Lewis needed, as Jenna Howard (5-0) pitched masterfully for her second complete-game shutout of the season. Howard struck out five batters and allowed no walks. She was perfect through 5 and 1/3 innings before a shallow pop fly dropped to the ground just beyond first base and inside the right field line.
Bellarmine's only other hit came in the seventh. After a hit by pitch put a runner on first with one out, Kim Locke smacked a single to right field. The lead runner attempted to take third on the hit but was gunned down by Gartland. Howard struck out the next batter to end the game.
The Flyers return to action next weekend, hosting Southern Indiana on Saturday and Southern Illinois Edwardsville on Sunday.
