SAUGET, Ill. - Lewis University senior right-hander Matt Rolle tossed his first collegiate shutout Sunday, a 1-0 extra-innings victory that gave the Flyers a doubleheader split with Missouri-St. Louis.

Missouri-St. Louis captured the opener, a Great Lakes Valley Conference game, by a 5-1 count.

Rolle (1-1) went the eight-inning distance in the scheduled seven-inning nightcap and allowed just three hits while striking out six. His performance allowed the Flyers (3-18, 2-10 GLVC) to snap a 10-game losing skid and win for the first time in six 1-run contests this season.

Ryan Duran drove home the game-winning run with a pinch-hit double. Pinch-hitter Ryan Reynolds led off the eighth with a single, and pinch-runner Joe Walsh advanced to second on Ryan McManaman (Waukegan, Ill./Waukegan)'s sacrifice before scoring on Duran's hit.

Rolle worked out of a two-out bases-loaded jam in the third after surrendering a single and hitting two batters. UMSL (11-5, 8-3 GLVC) also loaded the bases in the fifth, this time with nobody out, but Rolle kept the Rivermen off the board by inducing a popup and a double play.

UMSL threatened once more in the sixth before stranding two runners. The Rivermen had the tying run on second in the bottom of the eighth but were denied again by Rolle.

Billy Duffy collected two of the Flyers' five hits.

Lewis drew first blood in the opener, scoring an unearned run in the first. Leadoff hitter McManaman reached on a throwing error, moved to second on a ground ball and scored on Mike Smith (Lemont, Ill./Lemont)'s two-out single.

UMSL struck for three runs in the fourth and added a pair in the sixth off starter Jon Guzzo (0-4), who fanned six in six innings of work. Walsh pitched the final two innings and yielded just one hit.

The Flyers travel to Indianapolis on Wednesday for a GLVC doubleheader.
