ROMEOVILLE, Ill. -
Four Flyers hit home runs in what was a banner day for the Lewis offense in a pair of wins over Southern Indiana, Saturday afternoon in the Flyers' home opener. Lewis combined for 23 hits and 15 runs in the doubleheader, claiming 6-3 and 9-1 (5 innings) decisions over the Screaming Eagles.
The Flyers (19-4, 8-0) extended their school-record win streak to 18 games, while the Screaming Eagles fell to 15-13 (2-4).
Lewis took a 2-0 lead in game one when Beth Shelus and Mallory Paine ripped back-to-back homers to left field in the bottom of the first inning. The score remained 2-0 until the top of the fourth when Southern Indiana took a turn with the long ball.
Kristin Eickholt led of the frame with a solo shot to dead center, and Lisa Anderson followed later in the inning for a two-run blast to left field.
Kelly Dianis quickly tied the game in the bottom of the fourth when she led off with an opposite field shot over the fence in right. The Flyers took the lead for good in the fifth, scoring two times thanks to a double by Paine and a single by Kristy Vanek.
Lisa Gartland added an insurance tally in the sixth with a run-scoring single to left field.
Courtney Lyons (6-2) earned the win in the circle. She came on in relief in the fourth inning and only allowed one hit the rest of the way.
In game two, the Flyers registered two runs in their half of the first.
After Shelus reached on a bunt single and stole second, Paine doubled in the Flyers' first run. Dianis brought Paine home with a single in the next at-bat.
A two-run homer by Gartland with one out in the second put Lewis up 4-0. Shelus followed the home run with a double and scored in the next at-bat when the Southern Indiana pitcher committed a throwing error trying to get Paine out at first. Paine advanced to second on the overthrow and ended up scoring on the next play when Dianis singled to left field.
The Flyers increased their advantage to 9-0 in the third thanks to an RBI-single by Gartland and two-run double by Shelus.
Southern Indiana's lone run came in the fifth when Anderson belted her second home run of the day.
Jenna Howard (6-0) pitched Lewis to victory in game two. She scattered four hits while striking out two.
Gartland and Shelus each totaled four hits for the afternoon. Gartland had four RBIs, while Shelus posted three. Dianis and Paine each collected three hits and three RBIs. Christina Willis was 2-for-4 with a double and a bunt-single. Lyons had two sharp hits as the designated hitter in game two, and Carla Musillo and Vanek each had two hits for the day.
The Flyers battle Southern Illinois Edwardsville in a doubleheader on Sunday. First pitch is scheduled for Noon.
