Box Score
KISSIMMEE, Fla. -
The Flyers' offense took full advantage of their opponents mistakes on Sunday, combining for 15 runs in a 9-1 run-rule win (5 innings) over Stonehill College and a 6-1 victory over Northwood (Mich.) at the Osceola Softball Complex.
Lewis improved to 5-4 on the year, rising above the .500 mark for the first time this season.
Lisa Gartland (1-1) earned the win over Stonehill, giving up four hits in four innings of work. Courtney Lyons pitched the final inning, striking out three with one walk.
A first-inning home run by Jaime Ippolito accounted for Stonehill's lone run of the game. Lewis responded in its half of the first, scoring three times. Kristy Vanek, Carla Musillo and Michelle Yudys all came up with RBI singles in the frame.
The Flyers added to their advantage in the fourth, sending 10 batters to plate in a six-run inning. Musillo, who went 2-for-3 in the game and made an amazing catch in left field to rob Stonehill of a home run, opened the inning with a sharp single to center. She ended up scoring from third when Stonehill's catcher tried to gun down Kara Harmatys attempting to steal second but threw the ball into centerfield.
Harmatys and Christina Willis scored later in the inning when Gartland ripped a single into left. Harmatys scored on the hit, and Willis came around when the ball got through the left fielder's legs. Beth Shelus singled to score Gartland in the next at-bat.
After a Mallory Paine single and a Stonehill pitching change, Kristy Vanek knocked in Shelus and Paine with a base hit to center, putting Lewis up by eight.
In the win over Northwood, Lewis batted first and scored four times in the first inning, thanks in part to walks to three of the Flyers' first four hitters.
Walks to Gartland and Shelus, followed by a base hit by Paine and a walk to Vanek put Lewis on the board. Musillo brought in Lewis' second run when she hit into a fielder's choice. Northwood attempted to gun down Paine at the plate, but the throw was not in time. Courtney Lyons knocked in runs two and three with a single to right field.
Lewis' fifth run came in the third when Brittany DiPietro tallied the first RBI of her collegiate career, bringing in Musillo with a sacrifice fly.
Northwood's only run came in the bottom half of inning three, on a fluke play. Kristen Estes registered a bunt single and came all the way around to score due to a Lewis throwing error.
Lewis added on more run in the sixth, as Harmatys scored on a Paine single.
Julie Wingerter (1-1) picked up the win in the circle, going four innings with three hits and four strikeouts. Jenna Howard earned a save after working a scoreless final three innings.
Lewis faces West Virginia Wesleyan and Central Missouri State on Monday.
