ROMEOVILLE, Ill. -
Kelly Dianis totaled five hits with three RBI, and the Flyers received solid pitching performances from Courtney Lyons and Julie Wingerter, as No. 8 Lewis defeated Indianapolis 5-2 and 8-2, Sunday afternoon in a conference doubleheader at the Lewis Softball Field.
The Flyers improved to 26-7 (15-3), while Indianapolis fell to 20-13 (7-5).
Lyons (9-3) pitched the Flyers to victory in game one. She threw for the first three innings and re-entered in the fifth to pitch the final three innings, allowing a total of four hits and one run while striking out eight.
Lyons gave up the one run in the first inning when Lauren Booten homered to left center.
Lewis responded in its half of the first. Beth Shelus led off with a single and, after stealing both second and third, scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Kelly Dianis.
The Flyers went up 3-1 in the fourth when Lisa Gartland hit a lead-off home run, her fourth of the season, and Ashley LeGrand singled in another run.
Indianapolis added one more run in the fifth, off of reliever Gartland, but Lewis responded with two more runs in the sixth.
Lyons, who helped her cause in the circle by going 3-for-3 in the game, singled to start the inning. Kristy Vanek followed with her seventh double of the season, and LeGrand brought both runners home with a single for her second and third RBI of the game.
Amanda Wendlinger (8-6) suffered the loss for Indianapolis.
In game two, both teams went scoreless through the first three innings before Lewis busted out with a five-run fourth.
Dianis ignited the rally with a lead-off double off the wall in right center. She later scored when Gartland doubled to the gap in left field. After a walk to Lyons, Michelle Yudys brought Gartland home with a sharp single to center. Jessica Beck, in as a pinch-runner for Lyons, advanced to third on the play and scored in the next at-bat when Christina Willis beat out a grounder in the hole between third and shortstop . Shelus roped a triple into the right field corner in the next at-bat, allowing Yudys and Willis to score.
The Greyhounds finally broke through in the sixth, getting a two-run homer from Lindsay Maraldo, but they couldn't get any more, despite help from the Lewis defense. Two Lewis errors after the homer helped the Greyhounds load the bases with two outs, but Wingerter struck out the power-hitting Booten to end the threat.
Lewis put the game out of reach with three more runs in the bottom of the inning. Shelus, who totaled four hits and three RBI in the doubleheader, notched an RBI single and Dianis brought two runs in with a line-drive single off the wall in the left field.
Wingerter (7-3) went the distance for the Flyers in game two, allowing seven hits and two runs while striking out five. Indianapolis stranded 11 baserunners in the game, 17 in the two games combined. Megan Russell (8-5) took the loss for the Greyhounds. She struck out nine Flyers.
The first-place Flyers play next at Wisconsin-Parkside on Wednesday at 3 pm.
