Billy Duffy collected five hits Tuesday in the Lewis University baseball team's Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader loss at Saint Joseph's.
Duffy was 2-for-4 with an RBI in the seven-inning opener, a 6-5 Saint Joseph's win. He went 3-for-5 and had another RBI in the nine-inning nightcap, also a 6-5 SJC victory.
Lewis (4-33, 3-23 GLVC) took a 5-0 lead in both games before Saint Joseph's (20-15, 14-11 GLVC) staged comebacks.
The Flyers struck for four first-inning runs in game one. Ryan McManaman reached on an error, stole second and scored on Duffy's single. A single by Mike Smith was followed by Ryan Duran (Glendale Heights, Ill./Driscoll)'s two-run double, and Duran scored on a two-out single by Bryan Druktenis.
Lewis added a run in the second. Ryan Reynolds led off with a single, moved to second on John Benisek (Westmont, Ill./Timothy Christian)'s sacrifice and scored on Chris Brigham (Bolingbrook, Ill./Romeoville)'s single.
Saint Joseph's got on the board with three runs in the third and pulled even with two more in the fourth. The Pumas scored the winning run on a two-out, inside-the-park home run in the seventh.
Druktenis added a double for Lewis. Adam Stabosz, who relieved Duran in the fourth inning and quieted a Saint Joseph's rally, allowed just three hits, fanned three and did not walk a batter in 3 1/3 innings before suffering the tough-luck loss.
Lewis again enjoyed a productive first inning in the nightcap, scoring twice. After the first two batters were retired, Duffy bunted for a hit and scored on Smith's triple. Duran's single made it 2-0.
The Flyers plated three more runs in the fourth. One-out singles by Druktenis and McManaman were followed by Reynolds' two-run double. Reynolds advanced to third on Brigham's sacrifice and scored on Duffy's two-out infield single.
However, Lewis managed only four more baserunners over the final five innings. Saint Joseph's scored twice in the fifth, sixth and seventh to earn the victory.
Starter Matt Rolle was solid, yielding three earned runs, seven hits and two walks while striking out four in six innings.
The Flyers and Pumas play another doubleheader Wednesday at Lewis' Brennan Field. Game time is 2 p.m.
