KENOSHA, Wis. -
A seventh-inning homer off the bat of Mallory Paine and a complete-game shutout from Courtney Lyons gave No. 8 Lewis to a 1-0 victory over Wisconsin-Parkside in the first game of conference doubleheader Wednesday afternoon. But the Rangers got even in the nightcap, winning 2-1 in eight innings.
Lyons (10-3) scattered six hits and struck out four while walking one in the opener. Meagan Shimkus (12-8) suffered the loss for the Rangers.
Paine's home run, a lead-off shot, was just the third hit allowed by Shimkus in the game. Paine and Kelly Dianis singled in the fourth inning, and Carla Musillo added another single in the seventh.
Game two was scoreless through three before Dianis put the Flyers up 1-0 with her team-leading seventh home run of the season in the fourth inning.
The Rangers answered with a single tally in the bottom of the fourth, and the game remained tied until the bottom of the eighth.
With one out on nobody on, Alea McNellis reached on an error. Lewis starter Julie Wingerter intentionally walked the next batter and then got a fly ball for out number two. Mandi Andrews came up next and singled to left. The runner on third raced home and slid safely a split-second ahead of the throw from Musillo.
Wingerter took the hard-luck loss for Lewis, falling to 7-4 on the season. She yielded just four hits, allowing the single earned run in the fourth. Jessica Bryant (4-4) picked up the win for Wisconsin-Parkside.
Beth Shelus, Kristy Vanek, Christina Willis and Musillo each singled for Lewis in game two.
The Flyers (27-8, 16-4) are idle until next Tuesday when they play at Saint Xavier.
