ROMEOVILLE, Ill. - Joe Walsh tossed seven shutout innings in his first start of the season Wednesday to lead the Lewis University baseball team to a 5-0 Great Lakes Valley Conference win over Saint Joseph's in game one of a doubleheader.

Game two, a seven-inning non-conference contest, was an 18-9 Saint Joseph's victory.

Walsh (1-0) allowed seven hits, all singles, and did not walk a batter. Tim Harmatys allowed just one hit in two innings of relief.

The Flyers (5-34, 4-23 GLVC) did all their scoring early, plating two runs in the first inning and three in the second.

In the first, Chris Brigham led off with a single and Ryan McManaman followed with a walk. After Billy Duffy advanced the runners with a sacrifice, Brigham scored on Mike Smith (Lemont, Ill./Lemont)'s groundout.

Ryan Duran was hit by a pitch and Bryan Druktenis walked to load the bases, and a walk to Joe Carbone scored McManaman.

John Benisek was hit by a pitch and Brigham singled to start another Lewis rally in the second inning. McManaman sacrificed and reached on a throwing error that also allowed Benisek to score.

One out later, Smith collected his second RBI with a single that scored Brigham. Druktenis made it 5-0 with a sacrifice fly that brought home McManaman.

Brigham and Smith each had two hits.

Lewis trailed 4-0 and 8-3 early in the nightcap but staged rallies in the second and third innings to stay in the game.

The Flyers scored three times without benefit of a hit in the second. After the first two hitters were retired, consecutive walks to Brian Clancy, Tim Bingham, Brad Wanda and Brigham produced the first Lewis run. Duran was hit by a pitch to force in the second run, and the third run scored on a wild pitch.

Lewis scored five times in the third to make it an 8-8 game. Clancy delivered a two-run single, and Bingham and Brigham each had an RBI single.

But Saint Joseph's (21-16, 14-12 GLVC) broke the tie with a run in the fourth and enjoyed three-run outbursts in the fifth, sixth and seventh frames. Meanwhile, Lewis registered just one more run on Duran's fifth-inning sacrifice fly.

The Flyers travel to Drury Saturday for a GLVC doubleheader.
