ROMEOVILLE, Ill. - Mallory Paine blasted a two-run homer in the fifth inning and a game-winning solo shot in the bottom of the seventh to carry No. 8 Lewis to a 4-3 win and doubleheader sweep of Missouri-St. Louis, Saturday afternoon at the Lewis Softball Field. The Flyers earned a 9-1, five-inning win in the opener.

The Flyers (30-9, 18-4) improved to 9-1 at home and put themselves one win away from locking up the No. 1 seed for the upcoming Great Lakes Valley Conference championship tournament.

Paine's homers, her fifth and sixth of the season, both cleared the fence in dead center. Her first shot broke a 1-1 tie, and the game-winner came with two outs.

Courtney Lyons (12-3) earned the win for Lewis in game two. She allowed just four hits while striking out three.

The Riverwomen's first run came in the first inning after two walks and an RBI single. Jessica Keim tied the game at 3-3 with a homer in the sixth.

Emily Wagoner (7-12) suffered the loss for the Riverwomen. She allowed five hits and two runs, pitching the first four innings and then re-entering to pitch the seventh. Casey Moran worked the fifth and sixth innings, giving up Paine's two-run homer in the fifth.

The Flyers pounded nine hits in the first game, scoring four runs in the third and five more in the fifth.

Singles by Kara Harmatys and Michelle Yudys and a walk to Paine loaded the bases for Kelly Dianis in the third. A wild pitch allowed Harmatys to score, and an error by the Missouri-St. Louis centerfielder on a long drive by Dianis scored two more runs. Dianis ended up scoring when Kristy Vanek singled to center.

Christina Willis led off the Lewis fifth with a double and went to third on a sacrifice bunt from Beth Shelus. Paine brought Willis home with a single to left, and scored from first when Dianis ripped a double off the wall in right center. A single from Vanek scored Dianis with the third run of the inning. Lewis had runners at second and third and two outs when Harmatys doubled over the left fielder's head to end the game via the run-rule.

Julie Wingerter (8-4) pitched all five innings for Lewis, allowing only two hits while striking out six.

Dana Essner (6-6) took the loss, after working the first four innings and allowing four hits and one earned run. Essner also scored the Riverwomen's only run of the game with a home run in the fourth inning.

The Flyers wrap up their regular season by hosting Quincy for a doubleheader on Sunday at Noon. Lewis is one game ahead of Southern Illinois Edwardsville in the conference standings and holds the tie-breaker over the Cougars, who host Saint Joseph's for doubleheader on Sunday.
