KANSAS CITY, Mo. -
Sophomore slugger Kelly Dianis crushed three home runs, including the Flyers' first grand slam of the season, as No. 7 Lewis downed Rockhurst 14-2 and 6-5 Saturday afternoon in a conference doubleheader.
The Flyers improved to 23-6 (12-2), maintaining their hold of first place in the conference, while Rockhurst fell to 8-16 (3-11).
Dianis, the Great Lakes Valley Conference Player of the Week each of the past two weeks, went 4-for-7 in the two games, collecting six RBIs. She hit her first home run, a solo shot, in the sixth inning of game one to put Lewis up 9-0.
Dianis' second homer came one inning later when, with the bases loaded, she belted a long blast over top of the scoreboard in left field.
The Flyers pounded out season highs with 18 hits and 14 runs and took advantage of five Rockhurst errors in the game one rout. Julie Wingerter (6-2) earned the win with a dominant performance, allowing just two hits and striking out seven in the complete-game effort.
Lewis trailed 5-2 in a much more competitive game two before Dianis connected for her third homer of the day in the top of the fourth inning. The homer was one two runs Lewis scored in the inning, as the Flyers worked to erase the three-run deficit.
Lewis tied the game an inning later when Dianis, who was walked with a runner on third two outs, got in a run-down between first and second on an attempted steal. Dianis stayed in the run-down long enough to allow Lisa Gartland to race home from third without a play.
The Flyers completed the comeback with a sacrifice fly from Mallory Paine in the top of the seventh.
Gartland (3-1) earned the win in game two, pitching four and 2/3 innings in relief of starter Jenna Howard. She held the Hawks scoreless and gave up just one hit, a fourth-inning single.
The Flyers smacked seven hits in the nightcap. Three of Lewis' six runs were unearned as the result of four Rockhurst errors.
Dianis was one of three Flyers with four hits on Saturday. Gartland finished the day 4-for-8 with a three-run home run in game one and a double in game two. Beth Shelus was 4-for-7 with a double. Ashley LeGrand had three hits with a double and an RBI. Carissa Castonzo was 2-for-3 with a double off the wall in game one, and Kristy Vanek also smacked a double in the opener. Carla Musillo and Paine each tallied two hits.
The Flyers play again on Wednesday, hosting Wisconsin-Parkisde at 3 pm.
