EAST PEORIA, Ill. -
Courtney Lyons pitched a two-hit shutout and smacked an RBI double to lift No. 7 Lewis to a 2-0 win over Indianapolis, Friday afternoon in the opening round of the Great Lakes Valley Conference Championship Tournament.
The Flyers (32-10), the tournament's top seed, move on to face fourth-seeded Quincy later in the evening. The Hawks defeated Southern Indiana 13-7 in earlier action.
Lewis and Indianapolis went scoreless for the first three and half innings before Lewis broke through in the fourth.
With Lisa Gartland on first after a walk and one out, Lyons drove a pitch toward the gap in right center. Indianapolis right fielder Amanda Wendlinger attempted to make a diving catch of the drive, but the ball shot under her glove, allowing Gartland to motor home from first with the game's first run.
Lewis added another run in the fifth. Beth Shelus, who was 2-for-3 in the game, singled to left to start the inning and then stole second. A pair of wild pitches in the next at-bat allowed Shelus to advance to third and then home.
Lyons improved to 14-3 on the season, while Indianapolis pitcher Megan Russell dropped to 11-9. Lyons' effort was supported with solid defense in the Lewis infield. The Flyers turned double plays to end Indianapolis threats in both the third and fourth innings. The Greyhounds stranded four runners in the game.
