ST. PETERSBERG, Fla. - The Flyers split their first two matches of the season falling 3-1 (27-30, 35-33, 30-20, 30-24) to Saint Leo in the morning and later defeating Francis Marion 3-0 (30-17, 30-19, 31-29) at the Eckerd College Classic.
Kim Richards led the Flyers in kills in both matches, posting 13 against Saint Leo and a career high 14 against Francis Marion while hitting .619.
Sophomore Stephanie Sagat followed a double-double, 11 kills and ten digs, against Saint Leo with 16 digs and eight kills in the win over Francis Marion.
Ashlee Lindish had an impressive collegiate debut, registering 17 digs in the morning match and 18 later in the day. Against Francis Marion, fellow freshman Lauren Seliga was one dig away from a kill-dig double-double recording 10 kills and nine digs.
Against Francis Marion the Flyers out-hit the Patriots .292 to .100 and held a 6-4 lead in blocks. The Patriots' Krissy Mordini recorded a kill-dig double-double with 14 kills and 11 digs.
Lewis had to fight back to win the clinching third game as they didn't hold a lead until taking a 29-28 advantage on an ace by Richards. Senior setter Andrea Morrone, who recorded 43 assists, finished the match with a kill assisted by newcomer junior transfer Justina Begemann.
In the match against Saint Leo, the Lions out-hit the Flyers .301 to .192 and held a 9-2 advantage in blocks. St. Leo also served 10 aces compared to six by Lewis. Three Lions posted double-digits in kills. Chelsea Armer led all players with 15 kills. Teammate Eni Lukacs posted a match-high 18 digs. Seliga and senior Sylvia Ciezak had nine and eight kills, respectively for Lewis.
Lewis resumes action in the Eckerd College Classic on Saturday when they face Davis & Elkins at 3:00 p.m. and Eckerd at 7:00 p.m.
