Flyers Beat No. 19 Northern Kentucky In Five Games

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky - In a thrilling five game match the Lewis Flyers earned their biggest victory of the season, defeating No. 19 Northern Kentucky 3-2 (30-27, 18-30, 30-21, 21-30, 16-14) Saturday afternoon.

The Flyers took a seven-point lead in game one and held off a late Norse charge for the three point win.

Game two was dominated by Northern Kentucky, taking a 14-4 lead and never looking back.

With the score tied at 19 in game three, the Flyers scored 11 of the final 13 points to put the Flyers one game away from the victory.

However, the Norse would not go down without a fight, controlling most of game four and cruising to a 30-21 win.

Northern Kentucky's momentum continued in the fifth game as they jumped out to a 9-6 lead. Three straight points by the Flyers tied the score at nine and set up a back-and-forth affair down the stretch. With the game tied at 14, a kill by sophomore Stephanie Sagat, assisted by senior Andrea Morrone, put the Flyers a point away from the win. On the deciding match point Morrone not only served but delivered the decisive kill to give the Flyers the victory.

The Flyers' attack was led by Sagat's career high 24 kills. Defensively she notched 11 digs, two assisted blocks and a solo block.

Freshman Lauren Seliga and sophomore Sara deBuhr each registered 10 kills. Seliga also had 10 digs while fellow freshman Staci Paul recorded 11 digs.

Junior Lauren Hatter recorded a season high 19 digs.

Morrone registered 63 assists, four short of her career high. She also added eight digs and three kills.

For Northern Kentucky, Liz Holmes recorded 19 kills and 24 digs.

It was the first conference loss for the Norse as they fell to 14-3 (3-1 GLVC) while the Flyers improved to 12-2 (4-1 GLVC).

Lewis hosts Kentucky Wesleyan next Saturday at Neil Carey Arena at 1 p.m.
