Lewis rallied from an 0-2 deficit to top Rockhurst (27-30, 24-30, 30-20, 30-23, 15-12) Saturday afternoon in a Great Lakes Valley Conference match.
After two games it looked like Rockhurst was going to avenge their loss to Lewis in the GLVC tournament last season, but multiple Flyers stepped up and set new career highs in the thrilling comeback victory.
Senior Andrea Morrone recorded 68 assists, one better than her previous career-high of 67 against Rockhurst last season. She also recorded 17 digs, seven kills and three assisted blocks.
Sophomore Kim Richards led the Lewis attack with a career-high 26 kills. Defensively she added a career-high five blocks.
Sophomore Stephanie Sagat recorded her seventh kill-dig double-double of the season with 21 kills and 14 digs.
Freshman Ashlee Lindish recorded a career-high 32 digs.
Junior Lauren Hatter notched 20 digs and four service aces.
Freshman Kelly McConkey saw action in all five games, adding a career-high six kills.
Trailing 8-7 in game three the Flyers came to life with a 6-1 run to help extend the match.
The Flyers jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the fourth game but Rockhurst wouldn't roll over. The Hawks responded with a 12-2 run of their own to take a 12-9 lead. But the Flyers counted with a 7-1 and 8-0 run to take control force a fifth game.
The Morrone-Sagat combination was lethal in the deciding game. Morrone set up Sagat four times, including a crucial point to stop a Rockhurst run of four straight points early in the game. In the match clinching point it was Morrone and Sagat again, but this time it was Sagat setting up Mororne for the kill and the win.
Rockhurst out-hit Lewis .218 to .211 but Lewis held the advantage in the final three games, including limiting the Hawks to a .083 and .000 hitting percentage in games four and five.
Audrey Boese led the Hawks' attack with 14 kills. Lauren Hays tallied 27 digs.
The Flyers improved to 15-2 (7-1 GLVC) while Rockhurst fell to 13-5 (5-3 GLVC).
Lewis plays at Southern Indiana on Friday.
