Box Score

ROMEOVILLE, Ill. - After 90 minutes of scoreless soccer, sophomore Nestor Hernandez took matters into his own hands, scoring the game-winning goal just 28 seconds into the extra session and helping the Flyers to a much-needed win over No. 24 Indianapolis Sunday afternoon in Great Lakes Valley Conference action at the Lewis Soccer Field.

The Flyers snapped a two-game losing streak and improved to 8-4 (4-4 GLVC). Indianapolis lost in conference play for the first time this season, dropping to 9-2-2 (5-1-1).

Lewis controlled the ball to start overtime, but had to play into a stiff breeze. After receiving a drop pass on the right sideline, Hernandez charged toward the middle of the field, eluding several Indianapolis defenders, and fired a shot from just outside the penalty box. Indianapolis goalkeeper Matt Spaulding made a diving attempt for the grounder, but the ball went just out of his reach and into the bottom left corner of the net at 90:28.

The goal was the fourth of the season for Hernandez and his third game-winning tally.

The Flyers held a 16-12 advantage in total shots, including a 9-3 edge in the first half when the wind was to their backs, but they couldn't break through against Spaulding, who entered play ninth in the conference in save percentage. Spaulding made three of his five saves in the first half.

Taking full advantage of the wind, Indianapolis turned the tables on Lewis in the second, firing nine of its 12 shots after halftime. But junior goalie Anthony Szymel was up to the task for Lewis, recording three of his four saves in the second to keep the Greyhounds off the board. Szymel earned his eighth win and third shutout of the season.

The Greyhounds had four corner kicks, compared to two by Lewis. The Flyers were called for 13 fouls compared to 12 by Indianapolis. Each team received one yellow card.

Lewis improved its record to 3-0 in overtime and 2-2 against nationally-ranked opponents. The Flyers return to action on Friday, playing at Kentucky Wesleyan at 2:30 p.m.
