Flyers Suffer First GLVC Road Loss

EVANSVILLE, Ind. - Freshman Jenny Turpel and junior Kelly Dianis scored in double-figures but the Southern Indiana Screaming Eagles pulled away late for a 65-50 victory in a Great Lakes Valley Conference game on Saturday afternoon.

After Southern Indiana scored the first six points of the game the Flyers took their first lead at 8-6 with 10:53 remaining in the first half on a 3-pointer by Turpel. Southern Indiana finished the first half strong and took a 20-14 advantage into halftime. They extended their lead in the second half to 11 points on a layup by Jasmine Baines. The Flyers rallied to get within two-points at 36-34 with 10:18 remaining thanks in part to nine points by Turpel in less than four minutes. After Southern Indiana extended their lead again, two free throws by Dianis with 4:01 remaining cut the Screaming Eagles lead to four points. But with Southern Indiana in the bonus they put the game away at the line down the stretch.

Southern Indiana connected on 27-of-35 free throws. Lewis' made 6-of-16. The Flyers shot 31.6 percent (18-of-57) from the floor while Southern Indiana shot 37.5 percent (18-of-48).

Turpel finished with 19 points and was 4-of-5 from long range. She also added five rebounds, four steals and two assists. Dianis scored 16 points and recorded two steals. Freshman Kady Currin added two steals and four points. Junior Jenna Mooberry had seven rebounds.

Baines finished with a game high 23 points for Southern Indiana. Ninette Evans added 14 rebounds. Southern Indiana improved to 7-6 (2-3 GLVC) while the Flyers fell to 7-5 (4-2 GLVC).

The Flyers host Missouri-St. Louis on Thursday and Missouri S&T on Saturday.
