The Flyers rallied from down 18 to make it a three point game with under a minute remaining but the West Division leading Missouri S&T Lady Miners pulled out a 67-60 Great Lakes Valley Conference victory over the Flyers on Saturday afternoon.
The Lady Miners took a 35-25 lead into half by controlling the paint, holding a 22-8 halftime advantage in points in the paint and 17-10 rebounding advantage. Freshman Jenny Turpel started hot, scoring the Flyers' first eight points of the game. However the Lady Miners surged ahead, taking their first double-digit lead of the game on a layup by Tamara McCaskill at the halfway point of the first period. The Flyers cut it to six on a Trupel layup just over two minutes later but the Lewis deficit was ten at the break.
It looked like it may be a runaway victory for the Lady Miners when they scored the first eight points of the second half, but senior Jennifer Green ignited the Flyers offense. A layup and back to back treys by Green helped get the Flyers back within nine with 9:44 remaining. Junior Kelly Dianis nailed a 3-pointer with 6:49 remaining to get the Flyers within six. The Lady Miners stretched the lead back to eight with 1:28 remaining by making seven of their next eight free throws. Dianis responded with a 3-pointer to cut it to five. Lewis' full court press forced Chism McEntire to throw the ball out of bounds and give the ball back to the Flyers. Dianis then hit a jumper to cut it three with 37 seconds remaining. The Flyers were unable to get a steal on the next possession and were forced to foul. McEntire went to the line and made up for her previous turnover by hitting two free throws to put the game away.
Four Flyers finished in double-figures. Dianis had 14 points and three steals, junior Lauren Martens scored 12 with five rebounds, Green finished with 11 and Turpel had 10 with two steals. Freshman Kady Currin notched four points, four rebounds and three assists in 24 minutes of action.
Lewis scored 25 points off of 25 Missouri S&T turnovers while committing only 15. Missouri S&T shot 60.5 percent from the floor and held a 29-22 rebounding edge. McCaskill had 26 points on 10 of 12 shooting for the lady Miners. Lewis finished with a 35 percent field goal percentage
The Lady Miners improved to 12-2 (6-1 GLVC) while the Flyers fell to 8-6 (6-3 GLVC).
The Flyers are back in action at Chicago State on Wednesday. Tipoff is at 7 p.m.
