KENOSHA, Wis. -
The Flyers' first overtime game in a little over three years didn't go Lewis' way, as Wisconsin-Parkside defeated Lewis 74-66 in a Great Lakes Valley Conference game on Saturday afternoon.
The Flyers took an early 10-5 lead after a 3-pointer by sophomore Lauresha Hawkins. The Rangers scored the next six points to take a slim one point lead. The rest of the half was back and forth and the two teams went into halftime tied at 31. Lewis shot only 37 percent from the floor in the first half but their offense was boosted by connecting on 6 of 11 from long range. Three of the Flyers' six first half treys came from junior Kelly Dianis.
A Hawkins layup, a jumper by junior Lauren Martens and a layup by freshman Jenny Turpel gave the Flyers a 39-35 lead just under three minutes into the second half. The Flyers held the lead until the Rangers' Allison Smaglik hit a trey with 11:07 left to tie it at 48. Back-to-back layups by sophomore Amy Smith and Hawkins gave the lead right back to the Flyers. Junior Jenna Mooberry (Byron, Ill./Byron)'s two free throws extended the Flyers' advantage to five points with 2:36 left. However the Rangers made a final push and two Amanda Gibson free throws tied the game at 62 with 53 seconds left. Dianis' jumper with 22 seconds left was no good and the Rangers called timeout to set up a final shot of regulation. With one second on the clock, Turpel blocked MacKenzie Heise's jumper to force overtime.
In the extra session Hawkins tied it at 66 on a layup with 2:16 left. However the Flyers wouldn't score again and Gibson connected on six straight free throws to put the game away for the Rangers.
Lewis falls to 9-7 (5-4 GLVC). Lewis' last overtime contest was an 86-78 double-overtime victory at Bellarmine on Jan. 22, 2005. Dianis led all Flyers with 12 points. Turpel was a rebound away from a double-double, notching 10 points, a career high nine rebounds, four assists and two blocks. Hawkins also scored in double-digits with 11. Sophomore Amy Smith set a career high with nine points.
The Rangers upped their record to 12-5 (6-3 GLVC). Gibson and Kayla Ming both scored 21 for the Rangers. Denise Mannella added 18 and 11 boards. The trio combined for 60 of the Rangers' 74 points.
