Junior Lauren Martens scored 15 points but the Flyers fell to Northern Kentucky 73-42 in a road Great Lakes Valley Conference game on Thursday evening.
Martens started the Flyers off strong, notching four points and a block in the first minute. The Norse took their first lead at 8-6 with a 3-pointer by Jessie Slack. A trey by senior Jennifer Green with just under ten minutes remaining in the half gave the Flyers a 16-15 lead. The Norse responded with a 10-0 run to grab a nine-point lead. Lewis rallied right back with a 10-1 run, highlighted by seven points by Martens, to get within one point with 23 seconds remaining in the half. Two free throws by Cassie Brannen gave the Norse a 29-26 lead going into halftime.
The second half was all Northern Kentucky. The Norse grabbed their first double-digit lead with 12:13 left on a 3-pointer by Danyelle Echoles and cruised the rest of the way.
Northern Kentucky controlled the paint, out-scoring the Flyers 30-12 inside and out-rebounding the Flyers 34-28. The Norse shot 55.1 percent from the floor while limiting Lewis to just 30.6 percent shooting.
Sophomore Kaci Baird and freshman Jenny Turpel each grabbed five rebounds. Turpel also added six points, a block, a steal and an assist. For NKU, Bannen finished with 20 points. Slack added 14 while Angela Healy and Nicole Chiodi each had 13. The Norse improved to 14-5 (7-4 GLVC) while Lewis fell to 9-5 (5-5 GLVC).
The Flyers are at Bellarmine on Saturday.
